Mrs. Wirkus's page

FROM THE DESK OF:
MaryPat Wirkus, Principal
Welcome back to a new school year!
I pray that working together as a school community we can
guide our students to reach their potential while fostering a
closer relationship with Jesus Christ.
Faculty – We have three new additions to our faculty this
year: Mrs. Raimonda
Jalinskas will be teaching Music.
Mr. Jeremy Hall will be teaching Physical Education and
Ms. Rebecca Heffern will be the new Spanish teacher.
Mrs. Hirsch decided not to return to STS for personal
reasons. Ms.
Heffern has just received her postulant habit from the
Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist and resides in Meriden at
the Franciscan motherhouse. I
know you will join me in offering a warm family welcome to our
newest staff members.
FYI – Ms. Jamie Bolduc is now Mrs. Jamie Niemann.
Congratulations Jamie!
School Mass – Our first school Mass will be celebrated on
Thursday. September 2nd at 12:10 p.m.
All parents and friends are welcome to join us as Father
Nick blesses the new school year.
Construction – Recently I sent out information about the
parking lot construction.
Please adhere to the signs as you enter and exit the
parking lot. The
faculty and I will make arrangements for the students to have
safe recess periods according to the construction of the parking
lot. Again I ask
for your patience and keep your eye on the end product, a new
smooth parking lot and play area.
Play scape – I would like to thank Mr. Ken Arnold and his
volunteers for the great job they did on the construction of the
new play scape.
Without his expertise this project would not have been as
successful or possible.
Ken was able to secure project “ work donations” such as
the “big dig” spot for the play scape.
I know the students will be very happy with this piece of
equipment. Future
plans for the inside area of the play scape include a bike trail
and a small sandbox area.
Curriculum -
Two new smart boards were purchased for the school and
set up this summer.
Teachers will be receiving year long professional development on
smart board technology.
Grades k – 5 will be starting a brand new math series,
“Envisions Math” while pre k and k will be enjoying “Happily
Everafter and Superkids”.
These two programs are one of the top series in the
country. I have had
great success working with these two programs in the past.
Grades 4 & 5 will no longer transition as the set up for
the Archdiocesan schools is to keep grades k-5 as self contained
while the middle school students will still transition.
Uniforms – Modern Formals has everything you need to
complete the school uniform. Pre k students will wear gyms
shorts and tees to start off the school year.
During the cold weather they will wear sweat shirts and
sweat pants. Uniform swap is on going this week from 10:00 –
2:00. Please feel
free to come in and see what is available.
Girls may wear small
stud earrings only and clear nail polish.
NO silly bands or
other colored bands will be allowed to be worn.
Simple
hair accessories are limited to school colors only.
Milk/Hot lunch – For those parents who like to pay yearly
for milk the cost this year is $35.00.
Hot lunch is $4.00 per day. Snacks and ice cream are
optional at $1.00 per item.
Please make sure all
envelopes sent to the office are
clearly marked with
student name and what the money is for.
Michelle Porter is in charge of the Hot Lunch program and
has done a great job in setting it up to run smoothly.
Let us all help to make her job easier by following the
ordering instructions that will be sent home every month.
If you have any questions about the hot lunch program
please call or contact Michelle at 860-919-2627 or
mom969907@yahoo.com.
New
Parent Meeting – This Thursday, August 26th there
will be a meeting for new parents only.
It is a nice way for them to meet members of the school
board, HSA and faculty.
I would like a few 7th or 8th grade
students to be present as hosts and hostesses.
If your child can attend please have them call me at
school. The time is
from 6:30 – 8:00p.m.
HSA
Parent Meeting – Thursday, September 2nd at
7:00p.m. You will
be able to sign up for the different events offered for
fundraising and meet our new HSA president and officers.
The fund raising activities that are offered during the
year are to offset expenses in our school.
Last year under the leadership of Michelle Reignier the
HSA raised over $100,000.00.
It is through the tremendous efforts of our parents that
STS is such a success!
Thank you all.
Library - A very
special thank you to Ericka Bajrami for all her help in re doing
our school library.
Old books were filtered out and donated to other organizations.
Two new computer stations were set up and magazine racks
were installed on the wall.
I am waiting for four new round tables to replace the
rectangular ones which will be placed elsewhere.
Two a/c units were installed and the walls were freshly
painted. Several
new book donations were received over the summer as well as a
generous gift card for new books.
We still need a
librarian. If
anyone is interested please call the office.
After school program – If you are interested in the after
school program please call the office for more information.
ASP runs every school day from 2:10 – 5:30.
Ms. Gosselin and I are also looking for an adult
assistant to help run the program.
Please call Mrs. Wirkus if for more details.
Email addresses – As promised we are saving the environment
by using the emailing system this year for all parent
correspondence.
Parents are use to receiving messages from school on Tuesdays so
please check your email for school notices on that day.
It will be the parent’s responsibility to keep your email
address updated with the school office.
Tuition -
Just a reminder that tuition invoices are sent out on the
first of each month.
Payment is due on or before the 15th of the
month.
Handbooks – The parent handbook is now available on the
school website.
Please read and print off the “website and other
publications guidelines” sign and return to school by Friday,
September 10th.
Also please read and sign p.36 “Acceptance” and return to
school by September 10th.
The faculty and I look forward to
continuing our partnership with you in your child’s education.
The good news is out about all the changes here at STS
and word of mouth from our parents has certainly helped our
enrollment. (173
this year.) We are
eagerly looking forward to reuniting with you again on August 30th.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation.
Monday, August 30th is an early dismissal day
(12:05) as well as Friday, September 3rd.
Peace in the Lord,
