Welcome to Spanish

Hola y Bienvenidos!  My name is Senora Hirsch and I am your students’ Spanish teacher for grades K – 8.

The focus of my teaching is to help students learn communicative skills through simple materials in visually focused contexts (pictures, objects…).  Easy to answer questions require students to speak in the target language.  Topic based lessons dealing with functional situations are designed to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading & writing.  Culture is built into the various lesson components.

Grade K – We will be learning TPRs (total physical responses) in the beginning of the year. The teacher models a behavior several times and students mimic (sit, stand, walk, jump…).  Students already learned 4 responses in only 20 minutes on the first day!  Each week we will add 2-3 new TPRs.

Grades 1-3 – We will be reviewing our vocabulary from last year and will be starting a cultural unit on Mexico (songs, food, mariachi music…).

Grades 4-5 - We will also be reviewing our vocabulary from last year (classroom objects, numbers, family, clothes, days, months, colors…).  We will learn how to tell time this year and conjugate simple verbs.  There will be more focus on conversing in Spanish in the classroom.

Grades 6-8 – We will begin this year by reviewing our tenses (present & past) and vocabulary.  We will begin a unit on Spain (last year was South America), its culture, geography, climate, etc.

Hopefully, throughout the students’ journey they will discover that learning Spanish is fun and not too difficult at all!  So, let’s get started!  Vamos!
