Welcome to Second Grade!

Here we are in the midst of an unusual winter. The Holidays have come and gone and although we did not have a White Christmas, it was still a wonderful and blessed holiday. It is hard to believe we have already reached 2012! Happy New Year to all!

With the new year comes exciting times for the second grade class. January kicks off 2012 with Catholic Schools Month. This month gives us a time to reflect on what makes St. Thomas special. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach at St. Thomas, where all students freely can worship in our Catholic faith. The month is full of exciting activities. Our lockers in second grade are still proudly decorated, showing off our students’ personalities.  Come and take a look! Some of the second grades took part in our St. Thomas Idol Talent Show – they all did a fabulous job!

The students have been busy decorating Valentine’s boxes filled with treats to be delivered to the Veterans’ Hospital. On Sunday, January 29, Catholic Schools Month comes to a close with the school Mass at 10:00 am, followed by the Pancake Breakfast. We look forward to seeing all of our students at Mass and breakfast.

On March 24, 2012, the second grade students will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. They will be taking part in the Reconciliation ceremony in conjunction with students from the CCD class of St. Thomas Parish.  As the students prepare for this holy sacrament I encourage the parents to help the students learn the Act of Contrition:

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.

I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.

Our Savior, Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His Name, my God, have mercy.              AMEN.

The winter months are full of celebrations as we look forward to continuing to honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebrating the Chinese New Year (the year of the dragon), Groundhog Day, and of course, Valentine’s Day! February also brings us to the beginning of the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday is on February 22.

The students in grade 2 continue to abound in enthusiasm for school.  Their reading level has really sparked and they are in the midst of enjoying many non-fiction works. We continue to write and build the writing-reading connection, as well as the connection to our daily use of phonics.

The students math skills are continually improving. Daily practice of basic addition and subtraction facts remains a key to their success. Over the next month, we will be moving on to the excitement of double digit addition and subtraction! Yee-ha!

One of the most exciting events for the children is the transition in their handwriting from manuscript to cursive. We will be working on our cursive letters very soon!

A few words about myself:

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have taught in the middle school at St. Thomas for the past 4 years. I am looking forward to the new adventure of teaching 2nd grade. Prior to my arrival at St. Thomas, I taught 1st and 2nd grade at St. Mary School in Meriden for 5 years. I am a product of Catholic education, having attended Catholic schools from kindergarten through college. I received a BA from Providence College and my Professional Educators’ Certificate from C.C.S.U. I love teaching at St. Thomas!
