Welcome to Grade 4

Welcome back to school!  I hope you had a restful and enjoyable summer vacation.

This year will surely be very busy.  We plan on doing many interesting and exciting things along the way.  I am looking forward to a wonderful year with a great group of fourth graders.

It is very important that we work together to make sure the students learn how to become organized, accountable and responsible individuals.  The students will be given a green assignment book in which they are expected to write all their assignments.  Please check their assignment books regularly.  Homework is an essential part of learning.  It is given in order for the children to practice what we are learning in the classroom.  There will be long term assignments throughout the year, in which the students will have to pace themselves and plan their time in order to complete the projects accurately and on time.

In Religion, we will start the year off studying our prayers and the Mass.  Our first unit is entitled Growing in Jesus Christ.  We will understand that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and how He leads us to happiness.

Our theme for Reading is You Can Do It!, which includes a few selections of realistic fiction, a biography, and historical fiction.

In Language Arts, we will be studying sentence structure.  This includes types of sentences: statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.  We will also be discussing the main components of the sentence, the subject and the predicate.

In Science class, the unit the fourth graders will be starting the year studying is Life Science- Classifying Plants and Animals.  We will be using our textbook as our main resource, but we will also be exploring science in our everyday world.  There will be opportunities where the students will be able to make first hand scientific observations in our own classroom.

A main component of our Social Studies curriculum is the study of our state, the beautiful and historic state of Connecticut.  We are fortunate this year to have a textbook, The Connecticut Adventure, dedicated to the study of our state.  We will also be studying the regions of the United States of America in our Social Studies text, Regions.

We will be studying Numeration- Place Value and Money in Math class.  We have a new Math series and I am looking forward to exploring the many aspects of the Envision program

Please review the multiplication, division, up to and including the twelve times table, as well as the addition and subtraction facts with your fourth grader. These facts are essential for all of the topics we will be covering this year in Math.

                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                      Miss Stratton
