KINDERGARTEN CONNECTION

November 2007

We have a lot of things going on this month so please keep this handy.

Drew's mom sent in a great Halloween idea I thought I would share with you.

In math we finished the chapter on patterns.  Who knew there were so many ways to make patterns?  Now we are on to equal sets, more, less and the numbers zero to five.  After some of those complicated patterns this is a piece of cake.  Almost everyone can recognize most of the upper and lower case letters.  When you know them all you get to choose something from the treasure box so keep practicing.  We are starting to learn about the sounds the letters make. You a can help at home by saying words and have your child tell you what letter the word starts with.  You will know the letters we are working on by the papers they bring home. We are also starting to learn some vocabulary words.  Two or three words are introduced every few weeks.  The first two were a, and the.  You will find the words that we are working on the back cover of the weekly "take home book".  It also lists the consonant sound we are learning. Please practice the vocab words daily with your child.  They need to memorize them just like they learned the letters of the alphabet.

We are trying to read 100 books by the 100th day of school and we are well on our way.  So far we have read 85 books in 38 days!  It will be fun to see how many we can read by the end of the year.

This month we are also learning about Election Day, Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving.  For Election Day we are     going to have our own election in class.  Mrs. Peshka will read stories about three of our favorite characters, Arthur, Scooby Doo and the mouse from "If You Give A Mouse."  books.  After we hear the books we will go to the voting booth and vote for the character we like best.

We are learning a song for the Veteran's Day Program on Thursday, November 8.  If anyone has a father, grandfather, etc. who is a Veteran you can fill out the attached form and return it ASAP.  The person(or persons) will be mentioned in the program or better yet, if they are still living and would like to attend, please indicate that on the form as well.  They will go on stage with your child.    If you have any questions please let me know.  This is a very special program and all are invited to attend.

We will be having a Thanksgiving celebration with the pre-k 4 class on Wednesday, November 22.  All parents, grandparents, etc are invited to join us at 10:30 for a short program. Children may leave after the program.  More info will be sent home soon.

The Book Fair is going to be held in December this year so I will not be sending a book order form home that month.  Because of that I am sending the Holiday book form home this month.  Start your Christmas shopping early!  It has some great books for all ages and the prices are very good (no shipping and no sales tax).  If you would like to purchase books for gifts, please write a note with the order and I will somehow get the books to you with out your child knowing.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
